The latest crane on Newcastle's skyline
Newcastle's changing skyline has the addition of a further crane as Waygood Gallery & Studios continues its redevelopment of its city centre site.
The crane was installed over the bank holiday weekend of Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May 2008 in the car park next to Waygood's redevelopment of the former Wards Print Factory on High Bridge.
Supplied by Dowse the crane is a Potain E10-14C, it is 30 metres high, with a 40 metre jib, and can lift a maximum of 4 tons, or 1.7 tons at jib end. It is fully radio remote controlled.
It will be used by site contractors Rok to lift materials into the site and is especially needed as the historic lanes around High Bridge are too narrow for large deliveries.
Helen Smith, Waygood Creative Director, said:
“We are excited about the arrival of the crane as it really signals the start of our building project. The crane will become a feature on Newcastle's skyline as it will be on site until the end of the year”
Waygood's £7.8million capital redevelopment of the six storey warehouse and two grade 2 listed shop frontages on High Bridge will create:
- New Galleries which will offer an exciting programme of art exhibitions, residencies and live events.
- Artists' Studios will provide creative facilities, including fully accessible studios for a community of studio and associate artists.
- The Learning Centre will offer artist led learning and workshops linked to the programme and will include The Sir James Knott Trust Library & Archive.
- Café, Bar and Club will bring new, relaxed, alternative venue to the centre of Newcastle and will include an outdoor café courtyard and rooftop terrace.
- First floor office and workspace will be available to let for businesses and organisations.
- Waygood Art Boutique offering the opportunity to buy art and affordable artist made gifts is open currently open at 31 High Bridge as a small selling gallery and information office.
