“ Waygood on a table with wings” 2007 by Helen Smith
“Waygood on a table with wings” 2007 is the first in a new series of paintings by Helen Smith, artist and founder of Waygood Gallery & Studios. The surreal imagery found in her paintings is informed by her interest in contemporary social and political issues.
“Placing Waygood onto a domestic table-top achieves the aim of reducing the building to a scale that allows it to be viewed as a complete form. This symbolises the necessity to ‘stand back’ from a project, which began in 1995. It involves the consideration of an architectural form and it’s context in Newcastle as; a historical object; a meeting place; a cultural venue for viewing and discussing art; and a home for an international community of artists.”
“Wings as symbols of flight and take-off, pinpoint the present moment in time when the Waygood building, is about to begin an architectural transformation by András Pálffy and Christian Jabornegg.”
