The artist escaping from the destruction of the Sun 5 billion years in the future
Lee Guthrie
This image by Lee Guthrie takes an irreverent look at the subject of time mixed with a sideways glance at our belief and understanding of mortality, and of our own importance within the universe.
“I usually work with materials such as wax and bitumen so this is quite a departure from the working methods that I'm accustomed to. I've tried to harness the quick impact that the billboard creates, and tackle my usual themes of time and mortality with a bit of a broader brush and a smile.”
“The piece is based on scientific knowledge that the Sun's store of hydrogen (which is the fuel for it's fire) will eventually run out in 5 billion years starting off the process of its destruction. This will wipe out Mercury and Venus and make the Earth inhospitable to life. Will any of us escape?”
