Studying aspects of Newcastle's rich history, Brazilian artist Maria Helena Magalhŕes draws on local culture in her investigations. She observes past and present economic transformations in the city and many of her current studies focus around the Grainger Market.

Looking at space, place and time, Maria manifests herself as an ‘explorer‘, revealing the nature of a place and presenting a ‘moment in reality’.

“Words are taken from second hand bookshops, shapes and colours are delivered by the items collected there, as well as fragments of objects that are gathered from certain spaces to reconstruct realities of a local culture.”Maria Helena Magalhŕes

More broadly Maria focuses on how political aspects affect our everyday lives with women’s role in society is being of particular interest. She is currently studying a PhD in Arts and Culture at Newcastle University.
